MPEG Audio Encoder is a CD ripper for Mac OS Classic created by Oliver Dreer. It features line-in recording and a pleasing and easy to use interface, but a glaring omission is lack of CDDB support.

Version 2.0 was renamed to MPEG Audio Creator and saw the addition of MP3 encoding support, only to be removed a few days later in version 2.0.1. I suspect the author got a nasty e-mail from Fraunhofer...

Ironically, MP3 support would come back to the ripper in a roundabout way: Xing bought the program from Dreer to make it into the Macintosh version of AudioCatalyst, marking the end of MPEG Audio Creator development.

The author also developed a quite featureful audio player for Mac OS Classic called MPEG Audio Player.

It has playlists, tagging (read only), oscilloscope and spectrum analyzer, and a quite unique feature among players that allows real time adjustment of the playback speed.

It uses the MAplay decoder up to version 1.61, version 1.7b3 and later use the Xing decoding engine. Development ended with version 1.74.
