Blade MP3 encoder

Blade was an open source MP3 encoder developed by Tord Jansson. It started as a compile of the dist10 sources but soon Jansson started tweaking speed and quality, mostly at high bitrates (around 192 and 256kbps)

It never supported the more advanced features - such as variable bitrates, tagging, and free format - that can be found in LAME and other encoders.

Development officially ceased on 2002-08-11, although by then an year had already passed since the last update. The developer recommended users switch to Ogg Vorbis.

A mirror of the official page is available at the Internet Archive. You can check the entire changelog here. And you can also find pre-compiled versions of Blade for an insane amount of platforms at the Binary Distribution Point.

Petteri Kamppuri created a Mac OS Classic version of the encoder. Since this operating system does not have a native command line interface, Petteri managed to place Blade's command line output inside a window of its own. Input is done through the open dialog (File -> Open).

The web site can still be visited at the Internet Archive.
